Reception and accompanying of the street children and teenagers in the Maison Frère Yves

This project is underway at the Activity Centre of Maison Frère Yves. The objective there is the reception and accompanying of the street children and teenagers, offering them a safe and familiar atmosphere where education is promoted, and the reintegration with their families is the final goal. The time spent in the Home depends on the child and it can vary between a period of several days and up to 3 or 4 years.

Specific Objectives

  • recreate a familiar environment in all senses: Emotional, affection and trust
  • formal schooling of children and teenagers
  • professional training
  • health education
  • promote healthy lifestyle and healthy eating
  • provide basic heath care
  • provide ´follow up´ support and educational assistance after reintegration (Currently we are providing continued support to 30 children and Young people whose study levels range from primary school to university, including secondary education and technical studies)

People who benefit from this service

Homeless children and teenagers in Yaundé aged between 7 and 17 years old who live and work in the streets without a responsible adult to look after them who are also therefore marginalised by society.
There are many different reasons why these children are separated from their families
    • In most cases the children leave their homes due to family reasons such as divorce, domestic violence, polygamy, alcoholism or the death of one of the parents.
    • Some of the children have stolen something and they are afraid of going home
    • Children from poor families can be forced to live in the streets to survive
    • Unwanted children from single mothers
Currently there are about 30 children living at Maison Frère Ives Lescanne. The number changes frequently as some children reunite with their families, while others sadly return to the streets, and there are always new children arriving in the Home. We try not to overcrowd the Home with more than 30 children so we can offer a personalized education. In 2007 there were about 1200 permanent visits at the Maison Frère Ives Lescanne, this figure based on one visit being one day spent at the home per child, i.e. if a child stays 20 days it is 20 visits.

    Annual budget

This budget includes the expenses of the children who used to live in the Home and are now back to their families but are still accompanied and helped with their education by Maison Frere Yves.

    60.000€.
